1) NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Since 2012, The Vegetarian Resource Group has been a huge part of my life. From interning during my senior year of college to volunteering at countless vegfests, expos and conferences, my young adult life has been happily consumed with vegan activism and outreach guided by The VRG. My name is Whitney Blomquist and I'm excited to be the new editor of VRG-News! A big thanks to Shani Stewart for doing a fantastic job editing VRG-News the past few years!

DC VegFest was the latest event I had the privilege of volunteering at. Festivals like this give me the opportunity to connect with people from every walk of life. Some have been vegan for 45+ years, others are new to veganism, and a lot are just curious as to what a vegan diet consists of. Volunteering allows me to offer my knowledge and to supply people with reliable resources backed by the hard work and research of The VRG. It is so rewarding to leave events knowing you may have influenced someone to change their diet or equipped them with the information they need to make a successful transition to a vegan lifestyle. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer and contributing your talents to The Vegetarian Resource Group, please email Brigette, our Vegan Volunteer Coordinator, at: [email protected]

If you have any suggestions/improvements for the newsletter, please email me (Whitney) at [email protected]. We want to provide you with the information you want and need!

Happy reading!

6) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

  • Our interns recently completed their summer internships. During their time with The VRG, they participated in community outreach booths, made and donated vegan casseroles to a local food kitchen in Baltimore (Our Daily Bread), worked on adding entries to our dining guide, researched articles and peer review journals, reviewed vegan products, taught a class about vegetarianism at a youth summer camp in a low income community, and wrote blog posts. For more information on interning with The VRG visit:
    http://www.vrg.org/student/index.php ]
  • Casey Brown, who has interned with us for two years, recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Dietetics. She is now completing her dietetic internship rotations in Asheville, North Carolina. Casey staffed a VRG booth at the Asheville VegFest and will continue to table for VRG at other Asheville area events.
  • We are currently working on updating a list of senior living facilities that offer vegetarian and vegan options. See our senior living guide here:
    http://www.vrg.org/seniors/senior_vegan.php ]
If you know of any veggie friendly senior facilities, please email [email protected] and let us know!
  • Congratulations to the Senior Editor of The Vegetarian Journal, Samantha Gendler, on the birth of her first child. If you are the parent of a vegan or vegetarian child, be sure to join our Facebook group for veg parents here:

8) HOW TO CREATE A VEGAN WORLD: A PRAGMATIC APPROACH

I'm writing about my book on vegan strategy. Given our present situation, with entire societies dependent on using animals, we need a very pragmatic approach. “How to Create a Vegan World” contains many ideas and insights for both budding advocates for animals and seasoned activists, organizational leaders, and even entrepreneurs.
