Teen FAQs

What is vegan food?

Vegan food is more than just lettuce and tofu. When people say "vegan food" they usually forget that most of the foods we are already familiar with are vegan. Bean burritos, mashed potatoes, pasta marinara, peanut butter and jelly, and tomato pizzas are all foods that many people enjoy regularly and they also happen to vegan. Vegan food just means that it doesn't contain any animal products like meat, eggs, milk, cheese, or honey. By that description, there are plenty of vegan foods all around us.

Another common belief is that all vegan foods are healthy. Just like all other foods, some are better for us nutritionally than others. For example, while white pasta and whole-wheat pasta are both usually vegan, we know that it's healthier to eat whole-wheat pasta. With that being said, eating foods that aren't so healthy can be okay as long as they are part of a healthy diet overall.

Sometimes it's a good thing there are so many foods around that are vegan because it makes it easy for us to find something to eat when out with friends, eating away from home, or traveling. The following list provides some surprising foods you can find at grocery stores, school cafeterias, and movie theatres that all just happen to be vegan. Now you can prove to all your friends that vegan foods really aren't so different from the foods they normally eat.
